The pitches down here aren't booked, they're claimed — you turn up around seven and whoever is already on decides whether you're playing or waiting. By dark the separate games have blurred into one long queue for the enclosed pitch.

The bridge has little semicircular bays with stone seats built in. People sit in the west-facing ones and watch the sun drop down the line of the riverbed — five minutes' pause, not a picnic.
