It's a citrus garden, so the trees give almost no shade — in summer it's dead empty at midday and only comes back to life in the last hour before the gate is locked, with a handful of readers and couples on the pergola benches. The exception is when the orange blossom is out in spring, which is the one time people come specifically to sit here.

Once the terraces fill, the crowd stops trying to sit and just stands on the corner and out into the street with their drinks — the pavement becomes the bar. It's a Botànic crowd, not a centre crowd, so it stays loose and it thins out much earlier than Ruzafa.

The cannonball-scarred face is on the outer side and catches the late sun, so that's where everyone stands with a camera. The people who are actually staying a while sit on the inner side, in the shade at the base of the towers.

In summer everyone crosses to the wall side of Quart — the garden's trees lean right over it and it's several degrees cooler than the sunny pavement opposite. The low ledge by the entrance is the default 'wait for me here' spot for students living in the flats behind.

The outer side of the towers — the one facing away from the old town — is a big flat slab that local kids take over on scooters and skates once the afternoon heat drops. Tourists stand on the inner side photographing the cannonball scars; the kids have the other side to themselves.
