Morning shopping here is a street activity, not an indoor one — trolleys parked along the kerb, stalls and vans spilling onto the pavement outside the doors, and the real conversation happening in the queue on the street. It's over well before lunch; by three the same pavement is empty.

On the hottest nights people carry kitchen chairs out onto the pavement in front of their own doorway and sit there until well past midnight — the older, lower blocks, not the tall ones. The street stays half-blocked and nobody minds.
